Relationship between passive smoking and disease and death. Background of the problem. Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS). Managerial response. Extensive literature review. Hypotheses; definition of terms; design strategy; data collection.
Paper Introduction: Chapter One
Statement of the Problem
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study is to examine the ways in which business organizations have responded to concerns regarding the ill-effects of second-hand smoke in the workplace. Specifically, the purpose of the study is to determine how business managers perceive the problem of second-hand smoke and how they and their organizations have responded to this health concern. It has been theorized that employees who breathe in their co-workers’ cigarette smoke are significantly more at risk for the development of negative health conditions and significantly more likely to take sick leave than workers who are not exposed to workplace tobacco smoke (Second-hand smoke..., 2000).

Review of Literature
There is evidence of a significant increase in the reports of juvenile sexual aggression and sexual abuse with sexual assault in general one of the fastest growing violent crimes in the United States (Practice parameters for…, 1999). Approximately 20 percent of all rapes and 30 to 50 percent of child molestations are carried out by people younger than 18 years of age. Studies of adolescent sex offenders have shown that the majority commit their first sexual offense before the age of 15 and not infrequently before the age of 12 (Practice parameters for…, 1999).

An empirical research design is proposed to investigate why the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) failed the ratification vote in the United States on 13 October 1999 (Raum, 1999). For all those people who have been in a coma for the past several years, the CTBT is a broad-based treaty that was aggressively negotiated by the United States. The treaty is designed to halt nuclear weapons development by preventing the testing of nuclear explosive devices. The CTBT, thus, represents a companion strategy to attempts to stop nuclear weapons proliferation to those countries that have not already developed a nuclear weapons capacity.

I. INTRODUCTION
Statement of the Problem
Childhood sexual abuse continues to be prevalent and prevention or intervention efforts are considered a failure ("Child," 1999; Gelles, 1998). Childhood sexual abuse results in effects that continue into adulthood. Relationships between this sexual abuse and adult problems such as depression, anxiety, drug abuse, attempted suicide, and psychiatric disorders, have been found (McCauley, Kern, Kolodner, Dill, Schroeder, DeChant, Ryden, Derogatis, & Bass, 1997). In addition, effects of this abuse on college students has been indicated by increased drop-out rates for this population (Duncan, 2000). Studies with clinical populations appear to be

Burnout has been described as a state of fatigue or frustration brought about by an individual's devotion to a cause or way or life (or profession) that has failed to meet expectations (Vredenburgh, Carlozzi, & Stein, 1999). It further represents a state in which individuals expect little reward and compensation along with considerable punishment from work because of a lack of valued reinforcement, controllable outcomes, or personal competence (Vredenburgh, et al, 1999). The problem is viewed as significant in a number of fields, especially in education, where research suggests that many teachers leave the profession within a few years of entering (Betancourt-Smith, 1994).

Nurses are well aware that depression after childbirth -- often called the baby blues -- is fairly common, affecting as many as 15 percent of women who give birth. However, anxiety=s effects on the mother can be just as serious as depression and may overlap with postpartum depression symptoms. According to a study published in the July 1998 issue of the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, the depression and anxiety often come after the first child because the new mother does not have previous experience with which to compare it. We are proposing a research study to compare the psychoemotional consequences of early and late postpartum discharge on mothers of newborn infants. Depression and anxiety levels will be the specific psychoemotional consequences that will be examined. These

Acculturation of Iranians in America
Background of the Problem
The United States has been variously characterized as either a "melting pot" or a society that reflects cultural pluralism (Hess, Markson, & Stein, 1990). The "melting pot" model suggests that differences among groups are "melted down" over time and cease to exist, creating a social system of a high degree of homogeneity. In the model of cultural pluralism, it is proposed that the special contributions of immigrant groups and cultures add to the diversity and vitality of American cultural life (Hess, Markson, & Stein, 1990). Cultural pluralism implies an acceptance of differences in relatively personal matters such as food, family, religious rituals, and community associations. Further,

Over the last two decades, research studies have documented significant rates of child sexual abuse among both female and male children. Estimates for female children under the age of 18 who have experienced at least one incident of abuse ranges from 1 in 4 to 1 in 2.5 among nonclinical samples (Kohn, 1987; Wyatt, 1985). Estimates for male children are approximately 1 in 8.
There are a number of effects that have been associated with childhood sexual abuse, including psychological, sexual, and interpersonal difficulties (Briere, 1992). One additional problem that has been associated with early abuse is sexual

In several speeches in 1989, the United States Surgeon General indicated that over 2 million women are physically assaulted by their spouses or partners each year (Geffner & Rosenbaum, 1990). The O.J. Simpson trial, despite its many sideshows, managed to place the issue of domestic abuse more firmly on the center stage of public discourse. The growing awareness of the seriousness of the domestic abuse problem has resulted in the legal system taking such cases more seriously. In addition to increased incarceration and punishment, many judges have begun referring men who abuse their partners in domestic abuse intervention programs. However, few studies have been made to assess the effectiveness of such programs. Those studies that have been conducted have only drawn weak

Introduction
Among the many reform efforts currently undertaken to improve education in the United States is a trend toward holding students back from advancing to the next grade until they have mastered certain skills. The idea of social promotion has fallen out of favor; instead, the focus is on retention.
However, there is controversy about the value of retention. Educators disagree about the value of retention and the harm of social promotion, both intellectually and psychologically. Gordon (1999) asserted that retention is ill-advised and that

Background of the Study
In the last two decades, there has been a good deal of research that has focused on "resilient students." This research has defined these students as those who academically succeed despite their experiencing various strong stressors (e.g., poverty, parental divorce, etc.) that place them at risk of school failure (Christiansen, Christiansen & Howard, 1997). In each of these studies, researchers have found some characteristics which they identify as contributive to the success of these disadvantaged students.
For example, Dutrow and Houston (1981) observed that resilient students are: self-accepting, responsible, tolerant,

Abstract
"Computer-assisted instruction" is a much-debated topic in educational circles, and there is a reasonable amount of confusion concerning just how efficacious the term is. Part of the difficulty lies in the expansiveness of the subject itself, since CAI can range from simple "click here" programs designed to teach color and word identification to pre-schoolers to complex interactive anatomy software designed for medical students.
At issue, also, in this term is whether the CAI is as effective as the normal verbal/oral/human teaching paradigm, or is, in fact, more efficient. This proposal details a

According to Aronson, Wilson and Akert (1998), there are approximately 500,000 police officers in the United States plus 220,000 support employees. The police are citizen's first link with America's criminal justice system and although they should be free of ethnic or racial bias, Aronson, Wilson and Akert report that many police officers throughout the country hold prejudicial views of ethnic minorities. Here, prejudicial views are defined as consisting of: a) a sense of being superior to members of a minority group; b) feelings that minorities are by their nature different or alien; c) a sense that dominant group members have proprietary claims on privilege, power and prestige; and d) a fear and suspicion that members of the minority have designs on dominant group benefits.

Although research has established the NORPLANT method as one of the most effective approaches to contraception, the method has not been widely adopted by women (Cullins & Garcia, 1997). The need for a safe and effective approach, however, to contraception continues to be great (Wildemeersch, Van Kets, Vrijens, Delbarge, Van Trappen, Temmerman, Depypere, & Thiery, (1997). Better information is required in relation to why women select the NORPLANT method and why the method is rejected, if the use of this effective approach to contraception is to be increased.

Over the years, attempts have been made to define the contribution of excessive alcohol consumption to changes in body composition and body fat content. There is no doubt that excessive alcohol consumption leads to destruction of the liver, and thus associated body composition changes, and that many alcoholics appear undernourished, as they drink rather than eat, but the actual contributions of alcohol intake to body composition and body fat have been poorly studied. In the next section, some of the studies on the affect of alcohol on body fat and body composition will be examined.
