Paper Introduction: In terms of the characterization of Satan specifically, Paradise Regained offers a logical development from Paradise Lost. The character of Satan is different, but it is a difference that can be explained by the time that has passed and by changing circumstances as he must deal with the issues of battle over the souls of human beings rather than with the vast war in Heaven pictured in the earlier epic. Satan thus develops as a character through the two epics and between them, and an analysis of the Satan of the two works show how this has been effected, how it is portrayed, and what effects it has on the narrative.

Paper Introduction: The epic poem Paradise Lost was written by Milton to justify the ways of God to man. Yet the "hero" of the piece is considered to be Satan, the most powerful figure in the poem and the central intelligence for most of it. Adam and Eve are pawns in his challenge to the power of God, and the subject of the Fall is a central issue in the poem. Eve has long been considered the dupe whom Satan seduced into eating of the tree of knowledge in direct contravention of God's orders, and this original sin would doom their ancestors to death and to expiation for that sin for all time. Yet, it is possible still to see Eve as one of the major ethical protagonists in the poem even though she succumbs to this particular moral lapse, and an examination of her role can be one way to approach the poem and explicate its meaning. Paper Introduction: In Paradise Lost, Milton uses the word "event" with a meaning that is quite different from the way the word conveys meaning today and in a way that was even different from the general usage of the word in his own time. The meaning Milton ascribes to the word parallels the French meaning of the word and also harks back to the roots that make up the word. In addition, Milton includes in portmanteau-like way a reference to Eve which fits well with the underlying sense he is communicating through the word. For the most part, Milton is consistent in using "event" to mean "outcome," not in the sense of an activity or occurrence but in the sense of a consequence or result.

Paper Introduction: John Milton's epic poem, "Paradise Lost," is concerned with justifying "the ways of God to men," and his famous address on the necessity of a free press, "Areopagitica," also defends God's plan for the world and for mankind. In both works Milton argues that man must choose between right and wrong and that a benevolent Creator has given him the freedom to do so and thereby to prove himself His loyal follower. At first glance it seems incongruous that the author of "Areopagitica," which pleads for nearly unlimited freedom of expression as being in the best spiritual interest of a virtuous and well-informed people, is the author also of "Paradise Lost," in which human beings may appear to some readers to be rather simple minded, helpless pawns whose moral choices and subsequent damnation have been pre-arranged for them by higher powers.
