Makower's (64) article has two main facets-technology and historicalcontext. Makower's article is a history of mapmaking, while Tuan's article discusses geography as being about humans. Works CitedMakower, Joel. At the same time, heplaces each of these advances in its appropriate historical context, togive the reader a sense of where we were in history when the advance wasmade. He argues, for example, that "The development of the mariner'scompass permitted angular measurement, enabling a measure of accuracy innautical charts that wouldn't be seen in land maps for several hundredyears." He likewise points out other technological advances such as themodern terrestrial globe, the telescope, the pendulum clock, and logarithmtables, all of which enabled mapmakers and mariners to create maps thatwere far more accurate than those of the past (Makower 67). Makower stopsat various points throughout history and highlights advances such as theseto describe how they improved mapmaking technology. Makower'sarticle, on the other hand, is faithful to the discipline of geography aswe know it.One-Sided Sentence Outline I. III. Geography Comparison/Contrast The articles "The Map Unfolds" by Joel Makower and "A View ofGeography" by Yi-Fu Tuan offer dramatically different views of whatgeography is and what it signifies. In Tuan'sarticle, he places geography in the context of humans, arguing thatgeography is really about humans and how they have transformed theirgeography. Tuan's opinion is subjective and not upheld by authorities in the field. Makower's article has two facets-technology and historical context. II. Tuan (83), on the other hand, sees geography as "the study of earth asthe home of people." Although he provides interesting insights on thistopic, such as his contention that the core of the field of geography isthe home, Tuan (85) radically departs from most writing on geography byshifting his perspective from the earth to the humans that inhabit it.While it is certainly true that humans are interested in Earth primarilybecause they live there, characterizing geography as a study of Earth as ahome for people is a biased approach that fails to concur with mostgeographic writing of our time or any time. Tuan's article is about Earth as a home for people. Any writer is free to introduce his own perspective on a topic. However, in the case of Tuan, he presents as fact a subjective opinion thatis not largely upheld by other authorities in his field. From 13th-century western Europe to the Civil War and World War I,all the way to post World War II, Makower leads the reader through thesuccessive mapmaking technology advances that have transformed the craftfrom a primitive, inaccurate one to a technologically advanced andremarkably accurate one. "A View of Geography." The Geographical Review, 81.1, (Jan), 1991, 99-1 7. "The Map Unfolds." The Map Catalog. In Makower's article, he provides ahistorical context for the development of mapmaking, reflecting on thetechnological developments in the craft that advanced it. Although both articles are interesting and well written, Tuan'sarticle is actually more about sociology than geography, so Makower'sarticle is more appropriate in a discussion of geography. IV. New York: Vintage, 1986, 1 -13.Tuan, Yi-Fu.
