The very notionof wanting or needing an abortion- for whatever reason, be it rape, incest, economic problems or even the fragility of mother and/or fetus has turnedinto a political matter of the woman's right to choose. Why dosome women choose abortion? Incest and rape also figurein the decision to abort. There are theological argumentsagainst abortion. It is often an economic choice. It is unfair to deem all those women who want to manage their ownbodies as "liberal" and those who insist that the government and theChurches and moral leadership has a primary role in the Abortion decisionas "ultra-conservative." What is happening, unfortunately, is that neitherside seems to be willing to compromise. Ewers, Justin: "Where Obama and McCain Stand: Social Issues" U.S. Families arealready too large. Some give must occur on both sides. Wade). But,according to some recent research, some people are leaning toward acceptingpro-choice. The decisionhas been a major blow to abortion rights activists" (Houppart para. So, thechoice for many of these women is all too clear. Wade. Wade. Retsinas, Jean: "Science: Bane of Ideologues" The Progressive Populist, June 125, 2 7 para. It is unfair to subject a womanwho has been raped or has become the victim of incest to expect to bringthat baby into the world,. It's fair to say that themajority of Americans have either had an abortion or know someone who hasexperienced one" ("While...Abortion" 276). And, these women and girlsbelieve it is their decision to make- not the government's, notpoliticians, perhaps not even their communities or their families. Houppart, KaREN: "Curbing Abortion Rights" The Nation April 2 , 2 7 para. Trinity University's Dr. Michael Kerl'sgraphs indicate the following:By religion and educational level: 4 yr college -11 gradesFundamental Protestant 4 % 2 %Catholic 48% 3 %Moderate Protestant 6 % 27%Liberal Protestant 7 % 3 %No affiliation 95% 45%By Political orientation, the views changed from 1977 to 1994 1977. Still, abortion has not been nearly an important talkingpoint: "Barack Obama was playing down his support for abortion rights andsearching for common ground with conservative voters. Congress is still considering legislation called the Freedom of ChoiceAct (FOCA). As one commentator states it: For some, it represents sin. "While Political Abortion Rhetoric Picks at Tender Wounds Outreach Offers Hope" Women's Health Weekly (Oct 23, 2 8): p. But, 75 million annual unwanted pregnancies cry out for a fair andmoral solution. No one can make it any easier. Section 2 of this bill spells out exactly what its purpose is: "A woman's decision to commence, prevent, continue, or terminate apregnancy is one of the most intimate decisions an individual ever faces. As such, reproductive health decisions are best made by the woman, inconsultation with her medical provider or loved ones, without governmentalinterference." (Obama has signed on as a 1 7 co-sponsor of the Senate version of thebill, but McCain wants to overturn Roe v. But, sometimes thealternatives are so stark and so dangerous mentally as well as physicallyand economically that there simply is no other choice. 55. The Supreme Court has weighed in with its own recent ruling: "Thedecision of the United States Supreme Court to legalize a nationwide ban onso-called "partial birth." The Supreme Court decision upholds the PartialBirth Abortion Ban Act that Congress passed in 2 3. Abortion There may be no single divisive issue in the U.S. Interestingly enough, at the final debate last week between SenatorsObama and McCain, it was Obama who tried to reach out to both sides of thisequation by suggesting that the real effort needs to be sex education andthe prevention of pregnancies or, as a worst case scenario, to bolsterfunds for adoption agencies who can "sponsor" or assist pregnant women whocannot or do not want the babies. Those who say theyare Pro-Life say- and perhaps rightfully so- that no one else speaks forthe unborn child. It must be frightening for a pregnant woman to cross the shoutingcrowds that often gather at abortion facilities. There is no doubt that abortion- even thinking about having one- is adreadful decision. Not even doctors canagree. A few statesrequire physicians to inform women of that fact. Support for thisright is found in a number of human rights instruments, which containprovisions that ensure freedom in decision-making about private matters"(Watkins para 5).PRO-LIFE: Actually, there are several positions of these anti-abortion groups.First, the Catholic Church which is a firm believer that life begins atconception. The stigma will never goaway. It is the fact that too manypeople see the abortion issue as either black or white, with no sustainablemiddle ground that truly causes the rift and the often vicious arguments. One cannot truly say that one side is more correct than another. One needs to examine both sides of the issue as well as realize thatAbortion is no longer a secret last-minute device. Morgentaler (2 2) makes it quite clear the effects-positive- of a liberalization of abortion policies, worldwide. It is unfair to jeopardize a woman's health infavor of the unborn fetus'.SOME PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS: The magnetic allure of sex is everywhere- in our advertisement, on TVand the movies, in the fashions we are offered and in the books that weread. Democrats will appoint liberal judges who will strengthenthe pro-choice arguments, rather than appointing the Scalia-Thomas typeconservatives who are chomping at the bit for a McCain victory to get ridof Roe v. These women see it first as theirConstitutional right. There is simply no definitive, medical or scientific conclusion that can establish for everyone'ssatisfaction when life begins. 554 Watkins, Christine: "Abortion Is a Woman's Right. But,as more and more women and opinion makers in the U.S. Center for Reproductive Rights. First, PRO CHOICE: There continuers to be evidence that many women- chances are themajority of women-still strongly believe they have a right to choosewhether to have an abortion or not. The causes are many- includingcriminal rape and incest, underage pregnancies. Does lifebegin when the fetus is viable enough to have limbs and can move and evenbreathe, and there is a recognizable heart beat? In some cases, Down's syndrome babies can grow into responsibleadults Sarah Palin just gave birth to what she calls a "special needs"child. What generations ago was a deepdark secret, with the sort of back-alley disgraced physicians performingrudimentary abortions often in dingy and unclean surroundings, Abortion nowis even a major political problem. Thedrastic reduction of illegal, incompetent abortions with their disastrousconsequences has almost eliminated one of the major hazards to the livesand health of fertile women. Opinions are often steadfast because of religious or politicalsides of the argument various polls taken over the past years show thatmore people now tend to agree that a woman should have the right to choosean abortion. There are also some choiceswhen ultrasound or other devices prove that the fetus is somehow physicallyimperfect. bishops' Committee on Pro-LifeActivities, wrote that under FOCA "abortion on demand would be a nationalentitlement that government must condone and promote in all public programsaffecting pregnant women" ("Pro-Life" 5 ). They can elect to have it. What is most challenging now is the political polarization going on inthe U.S. In some ways it isalmost as impossible to come to terms as that mythical question about howmany angels can dance on the head of a pin. among even well-educated people than the issue of abortion. The pro-life groups- and there are many organizations, religious aswell as merely communal, who believe in the so-called "sanctity of life."This is an argument that simply will not disappear. "'Pro-life' advocates have lobbied against laws that facilitateabortions, and for laws that restrict them. This is a Republican war-cry that the so-called"liberals" a.k.a. Abortion is a bitter subject, either way. Temptation is there for pore=-marital as well as extra-marital sex.Even as the Catholic Church continues to warn against sex for reasons otherthan procreation, it is a very naïve teen-ager who is not tempted and maygo over the edge.
