The developers would use Python to code their work and will need adatabase, as well. The Web sitealso serves as a portal for registered users; these users have restrictedrights to content that is applicable to their needs and preferences. Newspapers began creating their own Web sites thatoffered late-breaking news as well as an alternative to the daily paper.Deadlines were an integral part of this new way of disseminating news, andupdating Web sites could prove time-consuming and resource intensive. Anewspaper in Lawrence, Kansas sought a way to create and update its Website quickly, and the web application framework that was to become Djangowas born. However, this introduced newlevels of complexity in Web development that could greatly increase theamount of time and resources necessary to develop and maintain Web sites(Weber, 2 6). Increasingly, Web developers found that there were some tasks theywere doing repeatedly and they found ways to automate those tasks.Templates were developed by most developers for certain types of Web pagesand tasks; most users are now used to radio buttons and entry fields thatare pre-populated or that will only accept certain entries. Django is one such framework that was developed by journalists tomeet the tight deadlines and content flexibility of a newspaper's Web site. Django The problem was particularly acute for those applications where Websites need to be updated frequently and under tight deadlines. References"Django FAQ." (2 7, August 25). The journalists/developers foundthemselves relying on databases and templates in order to shorten thedevelopment time. Retrieved 1 November 2 7 from: . Thethird type of user is the casual visitor who comes to the site and viewsthe home page. The Django developers did not want to use a language that would becumbersome or inhibit the application; instead, they wanted to use alanguage that was robust enough to meet their needs without being socomplicated as to require only specialists who could program in it ("PythonSlithers," 2 7). News weekliesprovided in-depth coverage of selected news stories. Analysis of the Django Web Application Framework Introduction Among the many changes brought about by the Internet are significantchanges in the ways that individuals receive and consume news. Site visitors could viewinformation but did not interact with it in any way. Django developers can use available templates to meet each of thesedifferent needs and do so quickly and effectively. As cable televisionbecome more popular, 24-hour news channels emerged such as CNN. Conclusion Web application frameworks provide Web developers with fast, resource-efficient tools to develop dynamic Web sites that provide greaterinteraction with lower overhead than traditional sites and developmentmethods. In thelatter half of the twentieth century, news was limited to broadcasts ontelevision or radio, or publication in daily newspapers. Example Scenario It is possible to envision a scenario with three distinct types ofusers where Django would serve as a useful tool for developing andmaintaining the Web site. Web Application Frameworks Initially, Web pages were static. They may register to gain access to the portal, or they maysimply view the information available to all guest users. This research considers the use of web application frameworks ingeneral, the Django framework in particular, and a sample scenario in whichDjango could prove useful. Lawrence Journal-Herald. This wasthe situation at the Lawrence Journal-World newspaper and its online site,World Online. The Django web application framework. By automatingsome tasks and creating templates or shortcuts for other tasks, developerscreated so-called "frameworks" that shortened the development cycle.Generally, these frameworks rely on a specific programming language(Willison, 2 6). Journalists were faced with tight deadlines in the highlycompetitive news industry but needed to update the Web site so thatvisitors would continue to return. Using templates and the robust Python programming language, Django caninterface with multiple databases to provide a user experience that iseffective for various types of users given their restrictions and differentneeds even on a single Web site. Django works with a number of different populardatabases, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite and Oracle. 3 -32.Willison, S. "Shoestring digital library", Library journal, vol. On their own, these individuals created their own Webapplication framework, a development tool that combines database accesswith templates and the Python programming language that resides in an opensource environment where anyone can make changes or improve the software(Django, 2 6). 131, no. Increasingly,Web sites became interactive and more "intelligent"-the information that isdisplayed is based on entries that the visitor makes to the site.Databases began to be deployed behind the scenes so that information couldbe updated at a single point but accessed from a variety of points withinthe site depending on the user's activities. They could click onlinks to move to additional pages, but their entries did not in and ofthemselves change the way that the Web site "behaved." As Web languagesgrew more powerful, connections grew faster and more bandwidth becameavailable, more flexibility was introduced into Web design. In this scenario, the Web site is accessed bythe e-commerce owner; the owner has administrative rights. Django does notrequire a separate Web server since it includes a basic development server, but if this scenario grows much a dedicated server is recommended.Developers are also free to use other template libraries beyond thoseprovided by Django, which provides additional flexibility ("Django FAQ,"2 7). It is important to notethat Django is not a content management system, but it does interface wellwith the databases that will contain the content that is ultimatelydisplayed to the user. Through the use of the Python programming language, the Django developers can create a static home page with links to the adminand registered user sites, as well as a link for interested visitors toregister and gain access to the restricted area of the site. With theemergence of the Internet, each of these types of media found themselvescompeting with news that was instantly available from any source, includingnon-journalists. The Python programming language was chosen for several reasons: it isalso an open platform language, which is in keeping with the open sourcephilosophy of Django, it is flexible, and although it is a high-levelprogramming language, it is also considered "elegant" by many of its users.
