Once the product shipped, another notification would be sent.In the meantime, the customer would have the option of querying the systemat any point to see what the status of his order was. All of these processes need to be able to communicatewith one another to update information and provide statuses back and forth. Itnot only provides and receives data but enables managers to perform what-ifcalculations and projections to determine such things as how quickly theproduction for a large shipment might be completed, how much impact theChristmas rush will have on the production schedule, or what the impact ofa parts delay would be in a particular production cycle. When the manager receives such analert, then he would perform a physical count for verification purposes.Either bar code or radio frequency identification (RFID) technology couldbe used for inventory management in lieu of manual physical counts("Strategic Inventory Tracking System;" "RFID") The service tracking system would exchange data with three systems:manufacturing production, inventory tracking, and customer service. The flow chart below illustrates the interaction between these varioussegments of the system, with the arrows indicating the flow of data betweenthem. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RFID"Strategic Inventory Tracking System." http://www.sstid.com/inventorytracking.htm----------------------- Manufacturing Production System Inventory Tracking SystemSales System Customer Service System Customer ManagersNotifications and Inventory RequirementsNotifications and QueriesOrders and NotificationsOrder info and QueriesQueriesQueries, Service Requests, and Follow-upsOrders andInformation The manufacturing productionprocess would use data from both systems to calculate how many productsneed to be manufactured by when. Acme Media Cutter Business Requirements Acme's new media cutter, the Laser Knife, has forced Acme to revampits ordering process by installing a new online order entry system. In addition to the data flows indicated, the parts of the systemshould be capable of issuing internal notifications to each other as well. For example, the manufacturing production system should notify theinventory tracking system and the customer service system of any productiondelays, breakdowns, material shortages, or other events that could impactthe production schedule. Inconjunction with this, Acme needs to amend its business requirements toexpand its manufacturing production, inventory tracking, and servicetracking, as well. At that point, the system wouldsend a notification to the customer by mail or email (depending on customerpreference) to confirm that the product was in stock and being prepared forshipment. When the customer service department answers acustomer inquiry, then, the customer service representative would be awareof the approximate delay in getting the customer's order shipped. Sa[pic] Works Cited"RFID." Wikipedia. The customer servicesystem would be apprised of all of the database queries and notificationsresulting from the order, so that if a product's manufacture were delayedand the customer had repeatedly queried the system, customer service wouldbe aware of it and could contact the customer directly to reassure him thatthe order was being followed through until delivery. The process starts with manufacturing production, where the productsare made. As it produces products, it then updatesboth systems accordingly to "notify" them of the fulfilled salesrequirements and new stock, respectively. When acustomer ordered a product that had not yet been produced, the servicetracking system would keep polling the manufacturing production systemuntil the product had been manufactured. Although these are separate business functions, they need to operateseamlessly as one integrated function, so every function needs to be housedon the same computer system and have access to the same databases, inaddition to using the same software program or add-on programs thatintegrate with one main software program. This process must be able to obtain data from the salesdepartment so that it will know how many more products need to bemanufactured and when they must be delivered, and it must be able tocommunicate with the inventory tracking system to determine how many ofthose products it already has in stock. The inventory tracking system must be accessible not only by themanufacturing production system but also by the service tracking system andvarious managers throughout the plant who are tasked with ensuring thatproduction quotas are met and inventory remains at a sufficient level. The inventory tracking system needs to automate the inventory processto such an extent that regular physical counts are no longer necessary, which means that it must incorporate self-checking logarithms and aninternal double-ledger system that prompts the inventory manager whenfigures are out of line with each other.
