According to Evans, Bill Gatesand Microsoft hope that corporate MIS Directors will be more concernedabout the risk of migrating to a new operating system than they are aboutthe security breaches in Microsoft products. Evans comments that Microsoft has recently purchased four securitysoftware companies. Accessed March 22, 2 5 online at: http://www.informationweek.com/story/showRticle.jhtml?articleID=6 4 3641 Evans notes that the new browser will onlywork with Microsoft's XP Operating System, and writes that some criticshave suggested this was done to encourage users to upgrade to the XPoperating system. Article Evaluation Summary In the article titled "Business Technology: Security, Microsoft, and High Stakes Poker" the author, Bob Evans, makes a number ofstatements about the poor reputation of Microsoft in relation to thesecurity of its operating systems. It seems likely that Mr.Evans will not be the only critic of the fact that 5 percent of theoperating systems in use are not XP and therefore are not the focus ofMicrosoft's enhanced security initiative. As one of the largest corporations in the world, Microsoft iscertainly not unaware of the complaints that it has been quick to promiseand slow to deliver on enhancements that would render its operatingsystems and Internet browser "bulletproof." It is possible, evenprobable that customers will balk at the idea of having to upgrade to theXP operating system to enjoy the enhanced security that Microsoft hasbeen promising users for the last three years. Evans implies that if pushed, Microsoft could develop andrelease a more secure operating system much sooner than in six months. For example, soon after Mozilla announced its Firefox browser had beendownloaded more than 25 million times, it prompted Microsoft to announceit would release the enhanced version of its Internet Explorer muchsooner than was anticipated. He makes the point that presumably the expertise ofthese companies is being used to make Microsoft products more secure.Evans complains that while Microsoft is willing to talk in generalitiesabout improvements in data security, it is unwilling to make specificcommitments. However, as an editorial, Evans made his pointscompellingly. If this was intended to be fair and balancedreporting, it failed to achieve that goal. Microsoftspokespeople are being deliberately vague, but word on the street is thatthe improved products will be available within six months. If Evansgoal was to suggest that MIS Directors should call Microsoft's bluff andmigrate to a new operating system, this article failed because itprovided no compelling reason to do so. For example, he did not provide details of securitybreaches and what these breaches cost companies and consumers. He suggests that past failures to create securesoftware has damaged Microsoft to the point that some people may be sotired of hearing empty promises that they take their business to acompetitor. Evaluation Bob Evans suggests that Microsoft is playing a game of chicken withnetwork managers around the country and around the world whose PCs andservers use Microsoft operating systems. (2 4). Instead, the company has used rollingpatches to fix security problems and relied on the patience of itscustomers to accept the idea that this is the best Microsoft can beexpected to do. Evans returns to the analogy that Microsoft is playing high stakespoker with customers. According to Evans, Bill Gates andMicrosoft are betting that customers will not migrate to competitors'operating systems platforms or to another Internet browser based onMicrosoft's promise that "this time" they are really serious aboutsecurity and committed to releasing products that protect their customersfrom hacking, other forms of intrusion and data corruption. ReferenceEvans, B. If the article was intended togive readers a detailed and comprehensive understanding of the securityproblems that plague Microsoft operating systems and the company'sInternet Explorer, Evans failed because he made no effort to provide thenecessary details. If this was intended as an editorial critical of Microsoft, itachieved its goal. "Business Technology: Security, Microsoft, and High Stakes Poker." Information Week. Evans reminds readers that Microsoft has never introduced abulletproof operating system. For example, Microsoft has yet to indicate when theenhanced products will be available to the general public. He implied that the goalis to select the lesser of two evils; continue to use an operating systemwith security problems, or adopt a new and relatively untested operatingsystem tn replace the Mibrosoft platform. I believe the article achieved its goal of remindingreaders that Microsoft has made similar promises of enhanced security forits operating systems in the past, and has fallen short on every promise. This article was too short to cover the subject matter adequatelyin a single article. In fact, Evans went out of hisway to comment that users have limited choices.
