Paper Abstract: This paper discusses various facets of computers and information processing, including the choice of best input or output methods for various situations, the best storage devices to use for different information storage needs, and the role of RAM, clock speed, and data storage medium in computer speed.
Paper Introduction: Computers and Information Processing Different methods of data input are appropriate for differentsituations For example the best way to input printed questionnaires isby keying in the data because scanning it in is likely to result in errorsdue to the fact that OCD reader software does not always interpret thecharacters that it sees correctly The word the might scan in as tne for example The drawback of keying the data is that it must be done byhumans rather than by machines A telephone
Text of the Paper:
The entire text of the paper is shown below. However, the text is somewhat scrambled. We want to give you as much information as we possibly can about our papers and essays, but we cannot give them away for free. In the text below you will find that while disordered, many of the phrases are essentially intact. From this text you will be able to get a solid sense of the writing style, the concepts addressed, and the sources used in the research paper.
Hard disk data is the nextfastest. Tape is very slow and only workssequentially. The clock speed is a measure ofcomputer power, but increasing it without a commensurate increase in othercomponents such as the type of microprocessor, the bus architecture, andthe amount of RAM will not necessarily increase computer speed; these workin conjunction with each other ("Clock Speed"). Bank checks are best scannedelectronically, because banks are set up to read the scans to obtainaccount number, routing number, and amount. The drawback of this method isthat scans are only images and cannot be used as data in themselves.Retail tags can be scanned by hand scanner or register scanner, because thebar codes on them translate into inventory information in the computer, removing the need to keep track of inventory separately. A statisticalreport could be output to a compatible spreadsheet program so that thenumbers could be used to perform further math functions and do what-ifscenarios. A hard disk is appropriate for capturing data that needs to be keptand used repeatedly over the long term, to obviate extra steps likeinserting a disk or CD and then retrieving the data. A resume should be outputto a laser printer, because it will deliver the optimum print quality. Data stored on the harddisk of a computer takes longer to access than data stored in RAM, but lesstime than data stored on external storage media such as CD ROMs or floppydisks. Various computer devices are appropriate for different situations, aswell. For a handheld computer, aportable printer would be best; both the handheld and the printer areportable and could be used anywhere. Amemorandum can be printed on either a laser or inkjet printer, since thequality of the output is not as great a consideration. Tape is good fordata that will be accessed sequentially only, especially for data thatneeds to be archived in large quantities. The drawback of keying the data is that it must be done byhumans rather than by machines. Computers and Information Processing Different methods of data input are appropriate for differentsituations. In terms of speed of access, the location where data is stored canmake a significant difference in the speed the user perceives the computeroperating at. Long documents are bestscanned in, to alleviate the need to type them in. A company annual report is best output to a color printer forhigh-quality output and color graphs and charts. A CD ROM is agood storage medium for data that will be used periodically and that needsto be kept indefinitely; it serves as a good back-up device for data thatis stored on the hard drive, since in the event of a hard drive failure thedata stored on CD can be restored to the new hard drive. Works CitedClock Speed. The best method of output for a specific situation can also varydepending on what type of output is needed. A telephone survey could be inputelectronically by having people respond via telephone, pressing one buttonfor "yes" and a different button for "no." The drawback of this method isthat for questions with an answer other than yes/no or true/false, it wouldbe difficult to input by telephone. The drawback ofthis method is that information that is not captured in the bar code is notinput. For example, the best way to input printed questionnaires isby keying in the data, because scanning it in is likely to result in errorsdue to the fact that OCD reader software does not always interpret thecharacters that it sees correctly. A photo printer is the best outputdevice for a color photograph; it will capture the color best and can printon paper specifically made for printing photos. The fastest access is with RAM. It should not be usedfor data that is rarely used, because a hard disk has limited space andshould not be filled up with data that it does not need. Retrieved on December 2, 2 5 from: http://www.computermemoryupgrade.net/memory-influence-on- performance.html A floppy disk isgood for data that needs to be portable and will not be used all the time;the disk can be transported from computer to computer and is a good storagedevice for data that will only be used occasionally because that data doesnot need to take up space on the hard drive. RAM is best for data thatwill be used immediately and needs to be retrieved quickly. Like other scans, theseare only images and cannot be used as data, so they cannot be searched. The RAM, clock speed, data stored on hard disk, data stored on CD ROM,and data stored on floppy disk all have a role in determining the speed ofa computer. The amount RAM, or random access memory, determines how muchdata can be stored for immediate access rather than stored on some mediumthat takes longer to retrieve data from, such as disk or CD ("Memory (RAM)and its influence on performance"). Another drawback is that items that come to the cash register withthe bar code missing must either be looked up in a reference book or aduplicate item found to capture the bar code from. Third is CD ROM data, and last is data stored on a floppy disk.
