Notsurprisingly, there is an entire section of the Web site devoted to"Workers and Factories" ("Responsibility," 2 5). The extension, called WFXML,enables the company to develop applications and services that support itsservice-oriented architecture (SOA). The site's home page (www.nike.com) uses alarge shoe over which various prompts appear, but the prompts are for aparticular geographic region. (2 5). Nike, Inc. Nike, Inc. Intranets can also be used to provide an online library of resourcesto employees. Nike has obviously invested indesign features, but has ignored the conventions that have evolved on theWeb and made the site more cumbersome than it needs to be for users. Or, the company could provide ethics training toemployees-an especially critical area since the scandals that rocked theindustry in the latter part of the twentieth century. Financial institutions have a wide variety of uses for intranets. The various policies and procedures that govern theinstitution's everyday practices can be archived in a searchable format onthe intranet. But this is in adifferent location from the "Buy It Now" section; if the user selects "BuyOnline," he or she is taken to the Niketown Web site. However, the "About Nike" of the Web site is organized differentlythan the entry page, and even has a different color scheme. A corporate network, on the other hand, mayinclude a wide variety of content, including Word and Excel documents, andlacks the infrastructure that makes the Web-and an intranet-easy tonavigate. Internet Use at Wells Fargo Bank Wells Fargo Bank makes extensive use of the internet for internal andexternal communication and strategy. In terms of internal communication, the site provides a link to thecompany's own intranet where employees can view their benefits, makeupdates to their information and take advantage of discount programs andother services offered by the company. (2 5). It has committed resources to its internalinformation technology group, and has expanded XML in order to developtools that meet its specific requirements. These products are being pitched to those who are alreadyfamiliar with the company, which may make them even more receptive to theadvertisements than pop-up ads that appear on third-party sites ("From WallStreet," 2 5). The Web site can also be used for paying billsto third-parties; this reduces the level of complexity associated with billpaying and is perceived as a valuable customer benefit (Bodner et al,2 5). The company also uses theInternet for competitive analysis and to test-market new products ("FromWall Street," 2 5). ReferencesNike. Selected customers are sent an e-mail with alink to a survey regarding the customer's experience using a given product, such as payroll services. By the nature, intranets link users within a single enterprise witheach other. Or the site may have had different developersworking in isolation who were not aware of the standards used elsewhere onthe site. This is also the location of the "Responsibility" sectionof the site. Retrieved 7 Nov 2 5 from: <>. There is also confusion about the various features of the site. Of course, intranet information need not be limited only to employeeinformation. Retrieved 7 Nov 2 5 from: <>. The intranet can also house presentations forkey areas or key customers so that when one individual leaves theorganization and another replaces him or her, there is a seamless trail ofdocumentation regarding key customers on the intranet. If the user selects "North America" and"USA" for example, another menu is displayed listing various products andoptions, such as "Buy Now" and "Football" ("Nike," 2 5). Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine, 59, p. The company uses the Internet foradvertising, for example, and has used pop-up advertisements on various Websites to link visitors to the Wells Fargo site and brand. There are unique features of the financial servicesindustry, however, that can also be well-served through the implementationof an intranet. (2 5, September). Also, although the home page is impressive visually, itis too difficult to navigate. Oneof the most common applications of an intranet is making benefitinformation available to employees. In addition, currentcustomers can conduct business through the Internet and the Wells Fargo Website to the point that companies can run their payroll on-site andcustomers can make payments to various loans or transfer money from oneaccount to another online. Also, thesite can do a far better job of indicating what is available on the site.A description of the "Customize" feature should be included, for example,so that consumers understand that they can purchase goods from the "BuyOnline" or the "Customize" section of the site. Itwould be helpful to group items by "Products," "About Nike," "Nike Labs,""Career Opportunities," and so forth so that consumers can quickly navigateto the area of the site that they need. Key calculators-including amortization and actuarial data-can be included on the intranet so that employees have ready access andinstructions in their use. (2 5). (2 5, May 16). 92.From Wall Street, a call to services. When suppliers are customers are included on the browser-basednetwork, but it remains closed to the public, it moves from being anintranet to being an extranet. ReferencesBodner, J., et al. Intranets can be used by employees todownload forms, and updated forms are easily to upload to the intranetsite. This is an excellent feature for acompany that employs many workers-branch personnel such as tellers, forexample-who do not have easy or confidential access to the Internet atwork, but who may well have access to high-speed Internet in their homes("Teamworks," 2 5). While there is some logic to having the siteorganized by language and region, these selections can be made from adropdown menu that does not require additional time to load. Financial institutions can thus use intranets in some of the same waysthat other companies use them-to communicate with employees, to provideways for employees to keep current on their benefit information, and totrain employees. The "Customize"button displays a "NikeID" set of pages. Regardless of the reason, the site misses an opportunity topromote brand management since it is disjointed from the home page to thecorporate information page. ITEM 5136 18.Teamworks. At the same time, intranets can be used to provide information aboutupcoming enrollment periods, details of various medical plans that might beavailable, and information about 4 1(k) and other benefits directly toemployees. The company alsohas an extensive Web site for customers, potential customers and employees;this Web site also includes advertisements for the company's products andservices. It might also be helpful if the home page for the various regionsincluded better descriptive titles rather than "football," "soccer," and"women's" with "About Nike / Jobs" included at the bottom of the page. Once the user links to the survey, there is abrief Likert-style survey that captures the experience of the user withregard to the product or service in question. Using an Intranet in a Financial Institution A corporate intranet differs from a corporate network in that theinformation provided on the intranet is typically presented in Web-basedform, using HTML, for example, and a physical network layer based on theinternetworking protocol (IP). San Francisco, CA: Wells Fargo Bank. Wells Fargo is committed to using the Internet as an integral part ofits long-term strategy. External communication is emphasized on the sitemore than internal communication. These include maintaining resources that help employees dotheir jobs, and keeping a document trail of communications with keycustomers. At the site, customers-both corporateand individual-can access their accounts and receive information abouttheir accounts via e-mail if they so choose. Analysis of Nike.com The company Web site for Nike is innovative in appearance, butcumbersome to use in practice. SOA, in turn, represents asignificant business strategy expected to thrive at Wells Fargo for sometime ("From Wall Street," 2 5). Securities Industry News, p. Simple solutions. Nike has encountered several public relations difficulties, the most notable of which is its use of child labor in Asia. Intranets may well give rise to extranetsin environments where it makes sense to do so, but many companies can useintranets effectively, as well. They can select colors-including the color of the famous Nike "swoosh"-andeven include personalization text on their shoe. Forexample, Nike offers consumers the ability to custom-design their own shoe. Retrieved 7 Nov 2 5 from: <>.Responsibility. Perhaps thesite is being redone and the company chose to keep certain elements activeduring the reconstruction. Wells Fargo also uses the Internet to conduct market research in theform of customer surveys. The Web site is used for dissemination of information both inside andoutside the organization. A financial institution could use an intranet to trainemployees on new products and services that the institution intends tooffer, for example. Under the "About Nike / Jobs" button, the user can locate informationabout the company-including investor relations and employmentopportunities. At the very least, the site should have the same look and feelthroughout-the user interface (GUI) should not change radically from onepage to another.
