Companies that do not hire outsideOracle consultants or permanent staff with Oracle backgrounds will need totrain their in-house staffs; even those companies that bring Oracleprofessionals in will need to train the staff members who will eventuallywork with the database. Oracle works well in these environments as well as Unix-basedoperations. "Oracle Hints at Grid Upgrades to Come." InfoWorld 26(Jul 12, 2 4): 16.Songini, Marc L. This ensures that the needs of both of these stakeholders areaddressed, and helps the company ensure that it is able to use itsresources in the best possible manner. SQL training, for example, may be required for a variety of workers whowill need to be able to write their own queries (Krill and Sullivan 16). However, Oracle also works in Windowsenvironments, and as companies are turning away from minicomputers towardnetworked client-servers that are PC-based, there is increased interest inthis environment, as well. "Oracle 1 g Could Ease DBA Tedium." Computerworld 38(Apr 26, 2 4): 14. WhileOracle is seeking ways to automate many of the functions that havetraditionally been performed by database administrators, Oracleprofessionals are still able to command high salaries relative to their non-Oracle counterparts. It is also important that the companymonitor those shifting needs and ensure that its information technologymeets those needs. Instead, thecompany should focus on migrating data from its existing systems, upgradeability, reliability, and cost considerations. In addition, stored procedures also offer centralized storage of codethat can be used by many different applications. Frequent failures can cost companies millions of dollars inlost revenues and productivity and lead to decreased employee morale. ORACLE DATABASES INTRODUCTION For most companies today, their computer systems form the heart of thebusiness. Increased efficiency isrealized in this way regardless of the programming language used-the samebenefit is seen in JAVA, PHP, ASP and Visual Basic, for example (Krill andSullivan 16). However, this is an expensivedatabase to purchase, and can be expensive to maintain when the appropriateeducation and training is taken into account. This research examines the considerationsthat companies need to take into account when implementing an Oracledatabase. Thedatabase is the core of these computer systems, allowing users to accessdata in real-time and providing the foundation from which applicationprograms are built. When deciding on the platform, the database should not be theoverriding consideration if Oracle is the selected product. Most people in a company givelittle or no consideration as to how the computer system is built exceptwhen it fails. Finally, it is important that the company includeapplications programmers in the database selection process so that thedatabase development and the application development processes progresssmoothly. Itworks on most platforms, including Windows servers as well as Unix servers, and has limited applicability in Linux environments, as well. Oracle also makes it possible toput considerable amounts of code in stored procedures; these are SQLprograms stored in the database itself and executed by the database engine, thus increasing the overall efficiency of the system (Krill and Sullivan16). Database Design When it comes to database design, companies should keep include thedatabase professionals as well as application programmers in the designprocess. All of these factors, plus the company's long-termreputation and financial stability, contribute to the high cost (Songini14). In addition, training has to take place on an ongoing basis as changestake place in the information technology environment. In addition, ongoing trainingis necessary to keep IT and non-IT professionals current with updates tothe database as well as with innovations and changes in the businessenvironments. This also requires a variety of education and training, including not only education on Oracle databases, but also on the businessissues that arise in the company (Songini 14). Companies need tocontinue to maintain the education of their staffs in order to keep currentwith the company's shifting needs. Oracle is one of the leaders in the databasemarket, and continues to market products that are robust, relativelyexpensive, and highly reliable. Works CitedKrill, Paul and Tom Sullivan. Web sites, accounting, sales tracking, manufacturing, humanresources and ancillary day-to-day functions all reside on various computersystems that are typically interlinked. Cost Oracle is among the most costly of the databases commerciallyavailable today, but it is also among the most robust and flexible. This requires that the database professionals maintaincurrent knowledge about the business issues confronting the company and usethat information to determine how best to modify the database in order tomeet those needs. In addition, there are few limitations to the applications that can be supported in anOracle environment. Platform Oracle databases can be run in most hardware environments, buttraditionally, companies have focused on Unix hardware platforms because oftheir reliability and stability. Similarly, companies may find that professionals who havenot worked with the latest Oracle products might not be able to support thecompany's implementation due to the ever-changing nature of the industryand product (Songini 14). Conclusion Oracle makes a strong and robust database that has gained considerableacceptance in the marketplace and that offers companies the flexibilitythat they need to meet their business needs. This reduces the need torepeat the same information in different applications, streamlining theprogramming process and also ensuring that errors are kept to a minimum. When programmers make changes to a single stored procedure, the change"ripples" throughout all applications rather than programmers having toreplicate the change manually (Songini 14). Choosing the right database requires understanding theneeds of the business as well as the hardware and software that works bestwith each database engine. Other staff members who will be working with theapplications that use the Oracle database will require additional training. Because Oracle is highly flexible and complex, companies that areimplementing an Oracle database system need to consider the types ofdatabase professionals they will need to administer the system. This is considerably faster than executing the SQLcalls and result sets between the database and programs that results whenSQL calls are used instead of stored procedures. Thus, one Oracle professional might be an expert onOracle's forms and reports, but have no idea how to create a new databasefrom scratch. The Oracle databaseshould work well in most business computing hardware environments (Krill,Sullivan 16). It is possible for programmers to use a collection of SQL statementswithin their applications, but stored procedures execute in native modewithin the database. Companies may have to hireexperts in Oracle databases in order to ensure that they have the bestpossible results from their implementation. IBM and Hewlett-Packard have long heldstrong market positions in this area in part because of their ability tosupport the Oracle database. This is due in part to the ability of Oracleprofessionals to specialize in a limited number of areas of databaseadministration. Training Once the database is selected, training will need to take place withthe current as well as new staff. While Windows NT suffered from some reliabilityproblems that slowed its acceptance in the market as an acceptableplatform, Windows XP appears to be gaining more rapid acceptance than itspredecessor.
